The examination of the breast feeding of 6- month babies who were delivered in baby friendly hospital and non-baby friendly hospitals of Tabriz: a cross sectional study

Introduction: It seems the status of breast feeding in Baby Friendly Hospital is better than non-baby friendly ones. The aims of this study is to examine the status of breast feeding among these hospitals in Tabriz, Iran. 

Materials and Methods: This is a cross sectional study in which 307 mothers who had six month baby were asked about their breast feeding during past six months through a valid questionnaire which has been used by ministry of health of Iran. Collected data were analyzed through descriptive and analytical statistics. Through this analysis, comparison between baby friendly hospital and non-baby friendly hospital in terms of breastfeeding was done.

Results: Totally 307 mothers including 257 ones who delivered in baby friendly hospitals and 50 ones who delivered in non-baby friendly hospital participated in the study. The mean age of mothers in two groups were 25.3±5.6 and 25.03±5.7 prospectively. Despite the similarity of two groups in terms of demographic characteristics, two groups were different in terms of beginning of breast feeding (P=0.02), rooming in (P<0.001) and exclusive breast feeding (P=0.007).

Discussion and Conclusion: Results of this study showed the babies who delivered in baby friendly hospitals had better status regarding excusive breast feeding.
