Introduction: Ensuring patient comfort during hemodialysis and managing common complications such as nausea are among the essential responsibilities of nursing care. Recently, the use of complementary, non-pharmacological, and low-risk interventions has gained increased attention in the nursing management of patients with chronic conditions.
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of foot reflexology massage on nausea during hemodialysis in patients referred to a selected military hospital.
Materials and Methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted in 2023 in the dialysis unit of a selected military hospital in Tehran, Iran. A total of 52 patients undergoing hemodialysis were recruited using convenience sampling and randomly assigned to either the intervention group (foot reflexology) or the control group (routine care). Patients in the intervention group received foot reflexology massage three times over the course of one week, with each session lasting 15 minutes per foot (30 minutes total). The Rhodes Index of Nausea and Vomiting was used to assess nausea levels before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 23, with a significance level set at P< 0.05.
Results There were no significant differences in demographic characteristics between the two groups. Moreover, there was no statistically significant difference in nausea scores between the two groups following the intervention (P= 0.089). However, in the intervention group, nausea scores significantly decreased from 4.15 ± 3.65 before the intervention to 2.75 ± 1.46 after the intervention (P< 0.001). In contrast, the control group showed no significant change in nausea scores, with values of 5.19 ± 3.15 before and 4.55 ± 3.26 after the intervention (P= 0.910).
Conclusion: The findings indicate that foot reflexology massage significantly reduces nausea in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Therefore, incorporating this complementary therapy into routine nursing care may be beneficial for managing nausea in this patient population.
