Introduction: Emotion regulation is a cognitive and skill-based individual-social process that assists individuals in responding appropriately to emotional situations and achieving more effective adaptation to their environment.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effect of training emotion regulation strategies based on Gross's process model on levels of psychological distress and aggression among soldiers in selected medical centers of the Islamic Republic of Iran Army.
Materials and Methods: This quantitative applied research employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test/post-test and control group. A total of 96 soldiers from the cities of Sari and Babolsar were randomly selected. The intervention, aligned with the stages of Gross's model, consisted of 8 sessions lasting 60 minutes each, delivered via lectures in July 2024. Data were collected using the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale and the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire, and analyzed with SPSS software at a significance level of less than 0.05.
Results: The two groups were homogeneous in demographic variables, except for education level. There were no significant differences between the control and intervention groups in pre-intervention aggression (P=0.546), pre-intervention distress (P=0.536), or post-intervention distress (P=0.083). However, post-intervention aggression was significantly lower in the intervention group compared to the control group (P=0.001). Additionally, both distress and aggression levels one month after the intervention were significantly lower in the intervention group than in the control group (P<0.001).
Conclusion: The results indicated that emotion regulation training based on Gross's method has a significant impact on reducing aggression and psychological distress in soldiers. Soldiers with higher emotion regulation skills are less likely to face behavioral and psychological challenges. Given the unique psychological and environmental conditions of military service, training in these skills can play an effective role in mitigating issues such as aggression and distress.
