Abstract:   (12 Views)
Introduction: Repositioning is a common nursing intervention in intensive care units, which can be associated with pain. Massage aromatherapy is a non-pharmacological method for pain management.
Objective: The present study aimed to determine the effect of massage aromatherapy with lavender oil on pain intensity induced by repositioning in patients with cerebrovascular accident hospitalized in intensive care units.
Materials and Methods: This controlled clinical trial was conducted on 81 patients with cerebrovascular accident. Patients were enrolled via convenience sampling and assigned to the placebo, intervention, or control groups using a simple lottery method. The intervention group received massage aromatherapy with lavender oil, while the placebo group received massage with sesame oil. The control group received routine care. Pain intensity was recorded before the intervention and after patient repositioning using the Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 22 at a significance level of P<0.05.
Results: The three groups were homogeneous in terms of demographic variables and pre-intervention pain intensity (P>0.05). Comparison of post-intervention pain intensity showed that on the third day, pain intensity in both the placebo group (2.63±1.42) and the intervention group (2.07±1.24) was significantly lower than in the control group (4.89±1.83) (P<0.001); however, no significant difference was found between the intervention and placebo groups (P >0.05).
Conclusion: Given the positive effect of massage aromatherapy on reducing pain, it is recommended that this method be utilized as a complementary intervention for this patient population.
