Introduction: Hospitalization in the intensive care unit following COVID-19 is very stressful not only for the patient but also for family members. Attention to the psychological problems of patients and their family members, including the patient family syndrome of the intensive care unit and counseling them uses new methods in the direction of holistic nursing. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of telephone consultation on the family intensive care unit syndrome among patients with COVID-19.
Material and Methods: The present study is a clinical trial study in which the statistical population was family members of patients with COVID-19 disease admitted to the intensive care unit of selected hospitals in Tehran, in the second half of 2021. Fortyfour people were selected by the convenience sampling method and randomly divided into two groups of intervention and control by coin toss. For the intervention group, telephone counseling was performed for 5 days and 20 minutes daily. Data were collected using demographic information form and FICUSI questionnaire and analyzed by SPSS
version 21 statistical software. Significance level was considered less than 0.05.
Results: There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of demographic characteristics (P>0.05). The mean score of family syndrome before the intervention was 87.45±9.65 in the experimental group and 89.90±11.33 in the control group, which were not significantly different (P=0.461). On the fifth day after the intervention, it was 100.05±12.06 in the experimental group and 109.66±13.12 in the control group, which was a significant difference (P=0.019). On the day of discharge, it reached 78.85 ± 11.24 and 109.38 ±12.47 respectively (P<0.001). Conclusion: Considering the effectiveness of telephone counseling on the FICUS of COVID-19, it is suggested that nurses use this intervention during the COVID-19 pandemic to reduce the psychological problems of patient’s family members.
