Introduction: Cardiopulmonary arrest is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate intervention. Training in Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is essential for the general population, particularly for military personnel who may encounter emergency situations in operational settings.
Objective: This study aimed to compare the effects of Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation training delivered through multimedia and guided practice methods on the knowledge and performance of military cadets.
Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted in 2024 among 102 cadets enrolled at a selected military university affiliated with the Army in Tehran, Iran. Participants were randomly assigned to two equal groups (n=51): A multimedia training group and a guided practice training group. Educational content was developed based on the 2020 American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines and delivered in two 2-hour training sessions. Data were collected using demographic questionnaires, a CPR knowledge questionnaire, and a performance checklist. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 21. A significance level of P<0.05 was considered.
Results: The mean CPR knowledge scores in the guided practice and multimedia groups before the intervention were 36.96±10.15 and 38.73±10.52, respectively, with no significant difference between the groups (P=0.351). Following the intervention, the mean knowledge scores increased to 73.73±15.32 and 66.18±9.30, respectively, demonstrating a statistically significant difference in favor of the guided practice group (P=0.005). Similarly, the mean CPR performance scores in the guided practice and multimedia groups before the intervention were 43.07±12.41 and 41.08± 10.59, respectively (P=0.431). After the intervention, the scores increased to 70.52±6.18 and 67.39±6.58, respectively, with a significant advantage for the guided practice group (P= 0.036). Comparative analysis revealed that the guided practice method improved knowledge and performance scores by 9.32 and 3.14 points, respectively, compared with the multimedia method, and these differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).
Conclusion: The findings indicate that guided practice training is more effective than multimedia-based instruction in improving both knowledge and practical skills related to Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation among military cadets. Therefore, guided practice is recommended as a preferred educational strategy, particularly for training military personnel who require proficiency in emergency response skills.
